Deepfake voice scams: a 30-second family safety plan

AI voice cloning has made the “family emergency” scam terrifyingly convincing. The caller sounds exactly like your child or parent, in distress, begging for money and secrecy. Here is a simple plan that beats it.

Set a family safe word

Agree a word or short phrase that only your family knows — something unguessable, not on social media. If someone calls claiming to be a loved one in trouble, ask for the safe word. A cloned voice cannot know it.

Always call back

Hang up and call the person directly on the number you already have. If they are fine, you will know in seconds. Scammers count on you staying on their call, panicked and rushed.

Know the red flags

  • Urgency and secrecy — “don’t tell mum/dad.”
  • A request for gift cards, wire transfer, crypto, or cash by courier.
  • A “new number” or a lawyer/officer speaking on their behalf.

Share this with the people scammers target most — older relatives especially. Two minutes now can save a lifetime of savings.
